Training In The Performing Arts

 

WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN:

Started in 1999, the Akshara’s Diksha Programme of Training in the Classical Arts teaches theatre, music, dance, painting, yoga and martial arts. The Diksha programme runs the year round from the first weekend of August to the last weekend of April, every Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 7pm for ages 4-16. The programme also offers a comprehensive training programme for older students on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Many students go on to join the Akshara repertory and become regulars in various professional plays and shows performed at the Akshara. 

 

During the summer vacations, Diksha takes the form of the Akshara Summer Festival, where classes and workshops are held five days a week in May and June.  Apart from theatre, music, dance, painting, yoga and martial arts, the Summer Festival offers film screenings, lectures by eminent personalities, creative writing, quiz and painting competitions and a Media Workshop.

AKSHARA ACTING WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS :

The Akshara offers a 2 month intensive workshop for budding actors that are 18 years and above. The workshop runs on weekends and explores acting for stage, voice, movement, and improvisation. Languages: Hindi and English. Mentors: Rajneesh Gautam and Swati.

This is a certificate course and all students will be part of a production that is staged for the public. During the course, the students may be asked to participate in exisiting productions by the Akshara repertory.

​​​Artists and writers such as Vid. Sonal Mansingh, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Mr. L.H. Naqvi and film-makers Krishnendu Bose, Prashant Sareen, The Dastangoi Collective,Theatre Garage Foundation and Susan Sharma have spoken and interacted with students of the Summer Festival. Workshops have been organized with institutions such as Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF India), and the Children’s Book Trust.
